Here is another example of a Science Heroes song in the early stages of development. For this one I took the liberty of adding some synth instruments on my own--just suggestions for melody lines, etc. We have yet to do an official recording of this song but we have a video of us preforming it live in our practice space. You'll notice how differently the final version turned out.

Science Heroes has a number of different ways in which we develop songs. One of those ways starts with me and my guitar. Basically, I write a song complete with lyrics and chord progression (as you do). At that point, the song sounds a lot like the above track.

When I feel like I've done as much as I can do on my own, I bring the song to band practice and Josiah starts to flesh it out with electronic instruments. During this step in the process, Josiah will usually come up with a key bridge or breakdown that pulls the whole thing together. In this case it was the 'extro'.

Our good friend Cory Anderson AKA Deep Rest recorded this cover of Monogamy from our album Transmission Zero Hour.

Deep Rest has an incredible handle on the art of creating mood with music. Mostly it's a profoundly melancholy mood but he has also mastered the sardonic with his songs.

Do yourself a favor and at least listen to the songs I've hyper linked here. They are beautiful and interesting and catchy.

March 19th at Redoux Parlour with Tunnel Kings and Control, Inc

On March 19th we played The Redoux Parlour in Eugene, Oregon with fellow Eugeniuses The Tunnel Kings and Control, Inc.

The Venue
The Redoux Parlour is more than a clothing store: they're designers as well. I know nothing about fashion myself, so it's probably best if you check them out for yourself--across from Sweet life, next to Laughing Planet in the Whiteaker distract.

There is a small stage in the store and once all the clothing racks are cleared out, it makes for a really great venue. Comfortable wood floors for the audience to stand on, clothing lining the walls creating a nice sound space. It works out really well. Definitely catch a show there, but do some shopping before hand as well.

The Tunnel Kings
We first played with The Tunnel Kings a few years ago at The Black Forest. They were minors and got kicked out as soon as they came off the stage. I was impressed with the raw talent of those kids at the time, but they've even come a long way since then. I was standing there on Friday, just listening, and my friend Jeff leans over and sort of understates, "The guitar players in this band are really good." The fact of the matter is The Tunnel Kings are a solid rock band in every regard. Song writing, musicianship, presence--it's all there. Here's a video of one of the songs I enjoyed.

I couldn't explain it, you just had to see it for yourself. I told them after the show, "Eugene's not ready for you, but they should be." I love this band.* We need one or two more doing the same type of thing so that we can start a scene.

Science Heroes
Remember when I mentioned that we put a little extra into our live shows that might not necessarily be on the recording. Well, here's an example. This is the end of New World as we play it live. If you have Transmission Zero Hour, you'll recognize the beginning part of this video, but after a while it will diverge into something else completely. The sound quality isn't great in here, but, enjoy:

The Eugene show is planned for Gutenberg College to celebrate the birthday of their "patron saint" Soren Kierkegaard, but the rest of the dates do not have venues booked yet. So, help us out. If you know of any good venues in any of these cities, or bands that might be a good match for us, let us know.

The Muse Lounge w/ Archeology and the Slants (2.27.2010)

As you may well know, we released our first full-length album, Transmission Zero Hour, on Saturday February 27th, 2010. We played a show at The Muse Lounge in Eugene, OR with The Slants and Archeology that same night. It was a hell of a show and a really top-notch venue. Here's some of the lovely people in attendance:

Yep, just your typical Science Heroes love fest.

The Venue:
The Muse Lounge is new in Eugene. The building used to be "Jo's Bar and Grill" over there on 21 6th Ave next to what used to be Taboo. Nice atmosphere, staff, stage, sound--all of it as good as it gets. If you get a chance to see a show there, go; you'll be right up close and personal with the artists and Joel (the sound tech) will make them sound awesome.

Archeology:
Although Archeology sounds nothing like Science Heroes (they'd be more at home playing with The Shins, Fleet Foxes or Blitzen Trapper), I think we have a similar approach to song writing: unique song structures with divers influences and strong narrative elements. I was really impressed with the songs they played from their new album--which comes out March 16th, btw. Exquisite vocal harmonies and pop hooks galore. Here's one of my favorites from their performance that night:

These guys are hot shit right now. They're getting tons of buzz* and critical acclaim in Portland where they're from. They played with Frightened Rabbit recently. As the story goes, Frightened Rabbit actually found them on myspace and asked if they would open for them--I'm waiting for David Bowie to do the same for us. We've been playing shows together since the early days of Science Heroes and you can't ask for nicer or more insightful guys to shoot the breeze with about the music industry and what's working and not working for independent artists.

Science Heroes:

It's a fun song that does a good job getting bodies moving. You might notice some variation between the live version of the song and the studio version. We try to do things a little different when we play live. When we perform New World, for example, it has a really kick ass extended jam at the end of it that comes right out of left field. One of these days we'll get good video of it and post it to the blog, but until then you'll just have to come out and see us perform live.

The Slants:
What can I say about The Slants? How about this: my dear friend, award winning poet Tobin Johnston had such a big man crush on them after the show that he came up to me practically begging for $6 (he had $4 already--god knows how he got it) so that he could buy their CD. This bohemian (e.g. cheap ass) motherfucker probably hadn't even downloaded our album yet (for FREE mind you) and he's hitting me up for money to buy The Slants' album. I'm not surprised, really; The Slants have that effect on people. Look at all the people they're effecting in this video.**

Science Heroes has a lot to learn about showmanship from these guys, that's for sure. After the show, we had a great conversation about what makes a good stage performance; they liked our gear, we liked their sweet break moves. The Slants have a new album coming out on March 16th as well.

The G-Spot Stage at the Whiteaker Bloc Party

On Saturday August 9th we played the second annual Whiteaker Bloc Party on the G-Spot stage. It was a hell of a lot of fun in the way only Whiteaker area people can make things fun. The G-Spot stage was one of 4 stages for the event. It was really a guy named Chris' converted car park, but it served it's purpose beautifully.

The sound guys did a great job and Chris gave us some free beer so all in all it was a good experience with good people. Now for some pictures.

Science Heroes Play the Holy Grail of Eugene's Independent Rock Scene: The WOW Hall

August 2nd, we, Science Heroes, played The WOW Hall for the first time. For those of you who are not in Eugene, The WOW Hall is not a massively multi player online role playing music venue--but it is a music venue. One could argue that it is THE music venue in Eugene. All the good bands coming through Eugene on tour play the WOW Hall and if you are local... well, you want to open for them. So basically, you ain't shit in Eugene until you play the WOW Hall, and then you're still not shit unless they like you enough to book you again. So, having said all that, let's start over--

On August 2nd, we, Science Heroes, played The WOW Hall for the the first time and we KILLED! It was a great show. Great audience, great sound. Here are some pictures.

The band that headlined is called Aerodrone. They did great that night as well. Here they are--

We played at Salem's The Space again on Monday, August 26th. Even though it was a Monday and there was a small turnout, it was a great show. Aerodrone played as did Sad Panda (The Space co-owner Jason's dance rock project). Here are some pictures from the evening (taken by Kevin from Aerodrone, I believe).

So, in conclusion: Aerodrone kicks a lot of ass. We are playing with them again on August 2nd at the WOW Hall in Eugene. Go to that show and see them play, you will not be sorry. We happen to kick some ass too so you will be double not sorry if you go to the show.

July 5th Show with Boomsnake

We played a show at Eugene's own Wandering Goat on July 5th at which time we premiered a new song and found a new favorite band. Let me tell you about it.

First: the band we played with. They are called Boomsnake and are from Portland. I got their latest album "Give and Take" and it is really, really good. It has a Radiohead, "In Rainbows" feel to it, but in a non-derivative sort of way if that makes sense at all... sort of Radiohead meets Vampire Weekend if you can imagine it (am I blowing your mind?!) Their live performance was fantastic too, but in an understated way. They kind of just sit there, but given that they keep doing weird and interesting things with all the instruments they play it really captivates the audience. They are on tour right now, so go see them if you get a chance... at least check out their myspace page.

Now about our new song. It is not recorded yet, so you will have to see us live to hear it. So far we have had a really good response from fans and friends alike--we got several glowing comments about the song after the show. This is a little disturbing because, while we are very proud of this song and knew people would like it, it is a bit of a departure for us. First off, there isn't any metal riffs in it--not one. In fact it has a district surf rock flavor (which is not entirely unintentional). The lyrics might be a little contreversial too, "This scene can't live with out us, this scene's got shit without our songs. It pours salt in our wounds and water in our lungs." This isn't intended to be a statement about the importance of Science Heroes as a band. It is really just a statement about how important bands are to a scene, but how the interests of said bands are often at odds with the interests of venues and promoters. I think I will write a whole blog on my observations along these lines at a future date.

Buy way of conclusion, I would like to thank everyone who came to the show. Most of you have come to Science Heroes shows before and it means a lot to us to see you coming back to hear us again. We are going to make it a priority this summer to get some new recordings out to you guys so that you'll have something to listen to while we are on a short break from August 15th through Sept 8th. But until then, we have lots of shows coming up, so check out our myspace page for dates and locations.

Science Heroes Feud

So, we were just googling ourselves (as you do)... you know, just to see what the online media has to say about us... and we came across this article that we are reproducing for you here in its entirety. Enjoy.

"Much has been made in recent days of the feud between rival electro duos The Postal Service and Science Heroes. While similar tiffs are common place in the Hip Hop world, the Rock and Roll community has not seen such sparks fly since dueling douche bags Scott Staff and Fred Durst had their little verbal sparing match around the turn of the century. In case you have been living under a rock, here is a summary of the saga so far.
About two weeks ago, Science Heroes, in the “sounds like” category of their myspace page changed the description of their music to: “(Sounds like) the winners of a tag-team celebrity cage fight with the Postal Service.” This small, but certainly inflammatory, statement was picked up by gossip columnists around the globe, many of whom asked the obvious question, “When was this cage fight?”
Science Heroes guitar player Andy Weber responded to these inquires in an interview with the Seattle Stranger saying: “It was merely a speculative statement based on the postulation that the character of our music is indicative of our prowess. To that end, we stand behind the claim.” But this caused even more commotion as many members of the scientific community hurried to denounce the assertion as incontrovertibly spurious in nature. “Such a faulty premise would never have survived our peer review board,” said Dr. J. J. Aegis of The Scientist’s Home Journal.
But where was the Postal Service in all this? Early this week Ben Gibbard, lead singing and lyricist for the Postal Service, released a written statement through the Death Cab For Cutie publicist which read simply: “(Through clenched teeth) Any time, any where, mother fuckers.”
The following Saturday, during an interview on Eugene’s KWVA radio program, The Baker’s Ball, Josiah Martens of Science Heroes fueled the flames by mocking Gibbard while parodying Simpson’s character Nelson, saying, “Ha Ha. You gave your publicist stage directions and he read them out loud.” To which Gibbard responded early this week with a written statement read by the new Death Cab For Cutie publicist, which read, “(Dismissively) At least I have a publicist, fuck-tard.”
What should we make of all this? Many members of the media are calling for an actual cage fight to settle the dispute, but there is uncertainty about how it should be promoted. “It would be nice if we could call it an ‘East Coast vs. West Coast feud’,” says Portland Mercury music columnist Bradley Wilson, “Or even a North West vs. California thing. But they’re both from the North West, so I guess we are going to have to call it, like, maybe a ‘Northwest Civil Dispute.’” An unfortunate way of saying things, but then again, they’re no Tupac and Biggie Smalls.
Still, one can’t help but worry about the fissures that this feud, if allowed to continue, might cause in the independent music community. Artists and fans alike are already choosing sides. Perhaps the best we can hope for is a clear victor in the inevitable bout between the two bands if a peaceful solution can’t be had."

Salem Show At The Space

We played a great show last night at Salem's newest rock club
The Space. It's a fun little venue with good people running it; catch a show there whenever you can.

The Decca Sequence played first. They are this insane group of musical prodigies that escaped from the tyrannous control of the evil Dr. Halfnote and now travel the world using their incredible musical skill for good. They are really mind bogglingly good; a mixture of beauty and what can only be described as sonic acrobatics. Check them out.

We Were Born As Ghosts played next and, wow, THAT IS ROCK AND ROLL. We've played with some shitty bands before, but this is not one of them. They have that amazing balance between heartbreaking aesthetics and high energy.

We had a great time hanging out with the bands and our friends from Portland who came down just to see us play (Thanks guys that meant a lot to us).

I was rummaging around on my wife's computer (as you do) and I discovered these little nuggets of goodness from the Agate Hall show. Mind you they were filmed on her 'ELF' so the sound quality isn't that great; but you'll get the idea.

In this first one you can clearly see the boys from Mon Marie inciting a riot while we innocently play our music.
It was a GREAT show. Thanks to everyone who came and had a good time and thanks to Mon Marie, The Arithmetic Danger Club and The Party Tigers for BRINGING IT!

Art Show At Gutenberg College!

We recently played an art show at Gutenberg College with local composer McKenzie Stubbert.

This is McKenzie (He's a dude. Surprised?) It's amazing: he is such an accomplished composer and yet he never learned to play a grown-up piano.

Just kidding, he can play big people instruments too!

This is Ashley (also a dude). He did sound that night. Incidentally, he also produced a couple of songs for us on the Mars Bluff EP.

Science Heroes and McKenzie! I was, at that moment, butchering "How To Disapear Completely" for a sound check. (I saw Thom Yorke do it on "Meeting People Is Easy" so of course I think I'm cool enough to do it too... I AM NOT COOL ENOUGH.) Also, at that moment, McKenzie nonchalantly informed Josiah about 9-11. It had been 7 years and we thought he was ready for it.

SPOILER ALERT! Here is a preview of an upcoming blog about our Agate Hall show with Mon Marie (extremely cool guys, go hear them play if you get a chance), Arithmetic Danger Club and The Party Tigers. Great show, good turn out. Fun was had by all.

Which is just one of the things we have in common with Pokemon.) ...juuuuusssst kidding. Jason's not throwing up--our music doesn't cause seizures; that's just ridicules! It does rot your brain, though.
